You have been asked to write a "two-page essay" or a "1,000-word article", and you need to know whether you are on track. Page counts and word counts do not convert exactly, because font, spacing and margins all change how many words fit on a page. These are the usual rules of thumb.
Words per page: a quick guide
For a standard page with 12-point type such as Times New Roman and one-inch margins:
| Spacing | Words per page (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Single-spaced | 500 to 550 |
| Double-spaced | 250 to 300 |
A typical 1,000-word essay is therefore about two single-spaced pages or four double-spaced pages. Larger fonts or wider margins reduce the count per page, so always check any formatting rules you have been given.
Typical lengths for common writing
- Paragraph: 100 to 200 words.
- Short essay: 500 to 800 words.
- Standard essay: 1,000 to 2,000 words.
- Blog article: 800 to 2,000 words, depending on the topic.
- Cover letter: 250 to 400 words.
- Social media post: often best kept short. Some platforms have limits of a few hundred characters.
- SEO meta description: about 150 to 160 characters.
How to reach your word count honestly
If you are short, add depth, not padding. Include a relevant example, a short explanation of a key term, a counter-argument, or a more careful conclusion. If you are over, cut repeated points, long quotations and filler phrases like "it is important to note that".
Does reading time matter?
Adults read at about 200 words per minute on average. A 1,000-word article takes roughly five minutes. For a spoken talk, plan on about 130 words per minute, so a five-minute speech is around 650 words.
Tips for staying within limits
- Write a rough outline with a target word count for each section.
- Check your count regularly rather than only at the end.
- Edit for clarity. Tighter writing is nearly always better writing.
- Check whether the limit includes the title, references and footnotes.
